The Chicago Cubs staged an impressive comeback on Wednesday, scoring 11 consecutive runs to defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates 14-10 after trailing 10-3 in the early innings. This victory marked the first time since 2019 that a team rallied from a seven-plus-run deficit in the seventh inning or later in Major League Baseball.

Prior to this game, MLB teams were 0-353 this season when facing such a deficit, according to CBS Sports’ research desk. The Cubs’ offense was led by Christian Bethancourt, who joined the team in July and had a standout performance, going 3 for 5 with seven RBIs. Bethancourt’s impressive display made him only the sixth Cubs catcher since 1901 to achieve this feat.

Most of the Cubs’ runs came after Pirates starter Paul Skenes left the game in the sixth inning. Relief pitchers Aroldis Chapman and David Bednar struggled, allowing eight earned runs on six hits and five walks. Despite the shaky start, the Cubs managed to secure their fifth win in the last 50 years when facing a significant deficit in the late innings, the most by any MLB team in that period.

After a well-deserved day off, the Cubs will gear up for a weekend series against the Washington Nationals before facing the Pirates again next week to conclude their season series.
