As the 2025 season approaches, the Chicago Cubs may undergo some changes.
With the opportunity to make significant strides next year, Chicago is likely to make moves to strengthen their roster during the offseason. Despite not meeting expectations this season, the Cubs still boast a talented lineup. However, a key player could potentially depart this winter.
Star slugger Cody Bellinger, who re-signed with the Cubs last offseason, has the option to opt out of his contract this winter. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand raised the possibility that a strong finish to the season could lead Bellinger to test free agency.
“Cody Bellinger, (Outfielder/first baseman), Cubs,” Feinsand mentioned. “Remaining contract: 2 years, $52.5 million. Bellinger inked a three-year, $80 million deal with the Cubs last offseason, which includes player options for 2025 ($27.5 million) and 2026 ($25 million). While Bellinger’s performance this season has been decent (13 home runs, .756 OPS), he has shown improvement since returning from the Injured List on July 30, hitting four home runs with a .822 OPS in 18 games. A strong finish could entice him to explore the market again this offseason.”
Bellinger plays a crucial role in the Cubs’ offensive lineup. Losing him in the upcoming winter would present a significant challenge for Chicago. Ideally, he will choose to honor his current contract, or both parties can negotiate a long-term agreement.
