Euro 2024: UEFA investigating after Turkey’s Merih Demiral makes far-right hand gesture in win over Austria

UEFA is currently investigating Turkish footballer Merih Demiral for making a controversial gesture with far-right connotations during a recent Euro 2024 match. After scoring a goal against Austria, Demiral threw up a “wolf” salute associated with the Gray Wolves, a banned far-right nationalist group in Turkey. This gesture is prohibited in Austria and punishable by fines. If found guilty, Demiral could face fines or suspension from UEFA.

In a statement, UEFA confirmed the investigation into Demiral’s behavior and promised further updates. This incident is not the first time Demiral has been involved in controversy, as he was previously reprimanded for making military-style gestures during games in 2019.

Demiral defended his actions, stating that the gesture was a display of his pride in his Turkish identity. However, the gesture received backlash from Germany’s interior minister, who condemned its use and highlighted the Gray Wolves’ monitoring by the German government.

The incident has sparked diplomatic tensions, with Turkey summoning the German ambassador in protest of the interior minister’s comments. The situation is ongoing, and UEFA is expected to take appropriate action following the investigation.
