A major trade shook up the NBA world on Friday night as the Timberwolves made a bold move, sending Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks in exchange for Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, and a 2025 protected first-round pick. This blockbuster deal has significant implications for both teams and will certainly impact fantasy basketball rankings moving forward.

Karl-Anthony Towns, PF/C, New York Knicks
Karl-Anthony Towns is known for his exceptional 3-point shooting ability, but his rebounding numbers have been on the decline in recent seasons. With a move to the Knicks and a chance to take on a more prominent role in the frontcourt, Towns has the opportunity to regain his dominance on the glass. Playing alongside Rudy Gobert in Minnesota impacted his stats, but now with a chance to be a focal point in New York, Towns is poised for a resurgence.
Having previously played under Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau, Towns has a familiarity with the system. During their time together in Minnesota, Towns put up impressive numbers and showcased his versatility on both ends of the floor. With the Knicks boasting a strong starting lineup, Towns’ efficiency and floor-spacing abilities will be valuable additions. As a result, I have upgraded Towns in my fantasy basketball rankings, moving him from a late third-round pick to a mid-to-late second-rounder.

Julius Randle – PF/C, Minnesota Timberwolves
Julius Randle faced questions about his fit with the Knicks following a turbulent season. However, with a move to Minnesota, Randle now has a chance to prove himself once again. Coming off an injury-riddled campaign, Randle will need to showcase his All-NBA form to secure his future in the league. The Timberwolves present a different challenge for Randle, as he will have to earn his minutes and prove his worth in a competitive lineup.
While Randle is expected to start for the Timberwolves, his fantasy value may be impacted by the team’s rotation and coaching decisions. With uncertainties surrounding his role and playing time, I have adjusted Randle’s fantasy ranking to reflect these changes, moving him down to the late seventh round in drafts.
Donte DiVincenzo – SG/SF, Minnesota Timberwolves
The trade also brought Donte DiVincenzo to the Timberwolves, providing the team with a versatile player who can contribute on both ends of the floor. DiVincenzo’s ability to play multiple positions and provide outside shooting will be valuable for the Timberwolves, who are in need of perimeter scoring.
While DiVincenzo was a solid fantasy performer last season, his role off the bench may limit his upside in fantasy leagues. However, injuries and lineup changes could open up opportunities for DiVincenzo to shine once again. As he is currently being drafted in the 10th round, I have placed him in a similar position in my latest fantasy basketball rankings.
