Jimmy Butler has been suspended once more.
The Miami Heat announced Butler’s indefinite suspension on Monday due to his trade demand not being met. This marks the third time he has been suspended by the organization this month.
Butler reportedly left shootaround after learning he wouldn’t start in the game against the Orlando Magic on Monday. Haywood Highsmith will start in his place. Butler had just returned to the team after serving a two-game suspension.
“The Miami Heat are suspending Jimmy Butler without pay effective immediately for an indefinite period to last no fewer than five games,” the team said in a statement. “The suspension is due to a continued pattern of disregard of team rules, engaging in conduct detrimental to the team and intentionally withholding services. This includes walking out of practice earlier today.”
Butler’s suspension will last a minimum of five games, with the possibility of it being extended indefinitely. The NBA trade deadline is approaching, and if the suspension is only for five games, Butler could return just in time.
According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, the suspension will cost Butler over $2.6 million.
Butler expressed his thoughts on the suspension on Instagram. He has been vocal about wanting to leave Miami and has not been happy with the situation.
Butler has been a key player for the Heat, averaging 17 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game this season. His desire to leave the team has been evident for a while now, and the Heat have now agreed to explore trade options.
“I want to get my joy back,” Butler stated before his initial suspension. “I’m happy here off the court, but I want to be back to somewhat dominant, I want to hoop and I want to help this team win. Right now, I’m not doing that.”
Butler’s behavior has caused disruptions in the past, and his current situation with the Heat is no different. Despite the consequences, Butler remains firm in his decision to move on from the team.
It remains to be seen if a trade will materialize before the deadline, but Butler’s determination to leave Miami is clear. He is willing to face the consequences and move forward with his decision.
