Here come the Pacers! Is their resurgence for real?

In September, the Pacers faced uncertainty about their season after a disappointing start. However, in the past month, they have turned things around dramatically. They have won 12 of their last 15 games and are now just half a game out of fourth place in the Eastern Conference. Their recent success has been fueled by a significant improvement in both their offense and defense.

The team’s recent performance has been impressive, with wins over top teams like the Cavaliers. Their offensive statistics have been among the best in the league over the past five weeks. Despite starting the season with multiple key players sidelined due to injuries, the Pacers have managed to maintain a competitive edge.

Players like Pascal Siakam and Myles Turner have stepped up, with Siakam putting up All-Star caliber numbers and Turner showcasing his unique skill set. The starting lineup of Haliburton, Siakam, Turner, Nembhard, and Mathurin has been particularly effective, outscoring opponents by a significant margin in the minutes they’ve played together.

Tyrese Haliburton has been instrumental in guiding the team through their ups and downs, with his performance correlating with the team’s overall success. Despite a slow start shooting-wise, Haliburton has been a key factor in the Pacers’ recent resurgence. Some of his challenges likely stemmed from his ongoing hamstring and back-spasm issues from last season, which he aggravated during the playoffs and reportedly reaggravated during the Olympics. Defenses also played a role in his struggles by giving him extra attention as a result of his All-Star status, often employing aggressive face-guarding and full-court pressure tactics to force him off the ball.

Haliburton also shares some of the blame for letting these defenses dictate his level of engagement, experiencing lapses in aggression that affected the team’s performance. He admitted to getting caught up in negative thoughts and self-doubt, which impacted his play and contributed to the team’s struggles.

However, when Haliburton plays more aggressively, the Pacers can compete with any team. For example, he had a standout performance with 31 points and seven assists in an impressive road victory in Boston. Despite a rocky start, Haliburton has returned to form, averaging 20.7 points and 9.2 assists per game since the beginning of the season.

His individual production aside, Haliburton’s impact on the Pacers’ offense has been significant. The team has become a top-10 offense since the opening month, scoring 18.5 more points per 100 possessions with Haliburton on the floor. He remains one of the league’s premier playmakers, excelling in assists, assist-to-turnover ratio, and points created via assist.

Although Haliburton is currently listed as doubtful for the next game due to a hamstring injury, the Pacers have shown resilience in his absence, particularly on the defensive end. They have improved defensively, allowing only 109.3 points per 100 possessions, a top-five mark in the league.

The team’s focus on defense has been a key factor in their recent success, with players like Mathurin stepping up in rebounding and the team collectively moving their feet well and contesting without fouling. Their defensive improvements have contributed to a more balanced and effective overall performance, demonstrating the interconnected nature of offense and defense in basketball. During this 12-3 stretch, transition plays have accounted for 17.2% of the Pacers’ offensive possessions, a significant increase from last season. They are scoring an impressive 139.3 points per 100 on these plays, far surpassing their still excellent half-court efficiency.

Moreover, the Pacers have limited their opponents’ transition opportunities to just 10.9% of their defensive possessions, the lowest in the NBA. When able to set their defense, Indiana has allowed just 92.5 points per 100 in the half-court, ranking fourth-best in the league during this span.

While Haliburton and Siakam have been impressive, Andrew Nembhard has been a key factor in the team’s success. Despite modest individual statistics, Nembhard’s impact is undeniable. The Pacers have a 59-win pace with him in the lineup, outscoring opponents by 12 points per 100 possessions.

Nembhard’s versatility as a playmaker, shooter, and defender has been invaluable to the team. His return has improved the Pacers’ turnover rate and spacing on offense, while also bolstering their perimeter defense. Nembhard’s ability to guard top backcourt scorers and disrupt opponents’ offensive flow has had a ripple effect on Indiana’s team defense, leading to better shot profiles and rebounding rates.

Overall, Nembhard’s presence on the court has been a game-changer for the Pacers, elevating their performance on both ends of the floor. The Pacers have found success in the minutes with Thomas Bryant stepping in for the injured Wiseman and Jackson, reducing the need to play small with Obi Toppin at center. This shift has resulted in Nembhard, a relatively unknown player outside of Indianapolis, showcasing impressive on-court/off-court splits, ranking among the best in the league. The team has excelled with Nembhard on the court, outperforming opponents by 17.8 points per 100 possessions, second only to Nikola Jokić in differentials among players with 200 minutes or more.

Can the Pacers maintain their momentum in the Eastern Conference? Nembhard’s return, Haliburton’s resurgence, Siakam’s consistency, and contributions from the bench players have all been instrumental in their recent success. They have also benefited from some favorable matchups, capitalizing on wins against teams facing injury challenges. Opponents have struggled to convert quality shots against Indiana, shooting just 33.5% from long distance during the Pacers’ 12-3 run.

While shooting variance and injuries have played a role in their recent success, the Pacers’ determined effort cannot be overlooked. The team’s ability to sustain this level of performance remains uncertain, especially with concerns about Haliburton’s hamstring. However, their recent impressive streak offers hope for a resurgence and a potential push for Eastern Conference supremacy. As the season progresses, the Pacers have the opportunity to deliver an encore performance that leaves fans ecstatic. text using different words:
