In a somewhat tense and awkward exchange on Jalen Brunson’s “Roommates” podcast, Brunson and Mavericks owner Mark Cuban discussed Brunson’s 2022 free agency departure from Dallas.
Brunson left the Mavericks for the New York Knicks in 2022, signing a lucrative four-year, $104 million contract. Despite being eligible for a $56 million extension with the Mavericks, conflicting accounts emerged about whether the offer was made and if Brunson was open to signing it.
Cuban claimed in April 2023 that the Mavericks were not given a chance to retain Brunson, attributing the decision to Brunson’s parents, particularly his father Rick, who is now an assistant coach with the Knicks.
During the podcast, both Brunson and Cuban shared their perspectives on the events leading to Brunson’s departure, addressing miscommunications and previous discussions. The conversation took a slightly uncomfortable turn when Brunson mentioned Cuban’s comments about his parents.
While Cuban insisted his remarks were not intended to be offensive, Brunson expressed that it had bothered him. Cuban apologized for any unintended offense caused.
Despite the lingering tension, both parties acknowledged that they had moved forward. Cuban humorously mentioned the interactions between himself and Rick Brunson, indicating a level of awkwardness that remains.
Brunson’s departure marked a significant move in NBA free agency history, with him blossoming into an All-Star and key player for the Knicks. The Mavericks, on the other hand, missed the playoffs in the subsequent season but eventually made significant roster changes, leading them to the NBA Finals.
Although both sides have seemingly moved on, there remains a sense that they will never completely agree on the events of that pivotal summer.
