Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown was displeased with Grant Hill’s recent comments regarding USA Basketball’s decision to replace Kawhi Leonard with Derrick White on the men’s national team for the Paris Olympics, rather than selecting Brown himself:
Hill, the managing director of Team USA, stated in an interview on “The Dan Patrick Show” that he had discussed the choice with Brown’s agent. Hill emphasized that the decision was based solely on basketball factors and not any conspiracy theories. He explained that the selection process involved finding the right balance and pieces for the team’s needs, and ultimately believed that Derrick White was the best choice to help them pursue gold.
Following the announcement, Brown hinted on social media that Nike may have influenced his exclusion from the roster. He refused to elaborate further at the ESPY Awards and suggested that more information would be revealed in due time.
Hill reiterated his stance on the selection process in an interview with Dan Patrick, emphasizing the difficulty of leaving talented players off the roster in favor of building a cohesive team. He explained that the decision was made to complement the existing players and maximize the team’s chances of success.
Hill elaborated on the basketball reasons behind choosing Derrick White, stating that the team’s dynamics during training camp influenced the decision. The discovery of Bam Adebayo and Anthony Davis playing well together prompted them to prioritize a guard who excelled in defense, leading to White’s selection.
Prior to these developments, Derrick White had already caught the attention of USA Basketball.
On June 14, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski mentioned that he could potentially replace Leonard, according to a report.
