Lee Carsley, the interim manager of England, has confirmed that he sees Trent Alexander-Arnold as a right-back after announcing his first squad since taking temporary charge of the Three Lions.
Alexander-Arnold was notably listed as a defender when the squad of 26 players for the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Republic of Ireland and Finland was revealed on Thursday.
This marked a significant shift from Euro 2024, where Gareth Southgate deployed the Liverpool star as a midfielder. Although Alexander-Arnold started England’s first two games in midfield, he was substituted early on both occasions, leading to a return to his original position as a right-back.
Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had reservations about Alexander-Arnold playing in midfield, and the player has since excelled at right-back under Arne Slot at Liverpool.
“For this camp, he will be utilized as a right-back in defense,” Carsley clarified.
“Trent, like many modern full-backs, possesses all-round qualities that almost make them midfielders, with excellent ball control and passing range, as demonstrated by Rico [Lewis] and [Kyle Walker-Peters] during their recent games,” Carsley elaborated.
“While he may transition to midfield at some point, I currently view him as a right-back.”
Having worked extensively within the FA coaching setup for England’s youth teams, Carsley’s first senior squad selection reflects his deep understanding of players who have progressed through the junior ranks. Notable inclusions are former Manchester United prospect Angel Gomes, now at Lille, as well as Tino Livramento, Morgan Gibbs-White, and a return for Rico Lewis. Additionally, Chelsea winger Noni Madueke receives his first call-up to the national team.
