Former Pakistan cricketer Tanvir Ahmed has raised concerns about the future of Indian cricket, especially after the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The Indian team is currently in a phase of transition, with young players like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rishabh Pant being seen as the future of the team by the BCCI.
However, Tanvir Ahmed believes that these young Indian players may struggle in overseas conditions, where the pitches are not as favorable to batting. He pointed out that in the recent ODI series against Sri Lanka, the likes of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant failed to make a significant impact.
“All the new batters in this Indian team at the moment, barring Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, they cannot carry forward this batting line-up in the future,” Tanvir Ahmed said.
“They might score runs in their home conditions on flat pitches but on pitches where the ball turns, seams, and swings, this batting lineup of India does not have the capability to perform,” he added.
Performance of India’s batters in the Sri Lanka series:
Player | Innings | Runs |
---|---|---|
Shubman Gill | 5 | 130 |
Yashasvi Jaiswal | 3 | 80 |
Shreyas Iyer | 3 | 38 |
Rishabh Pant | 3 | 57 |
Riyan Parag | 3 | 48 |
KL Rahul | 2 | 31 |
Rinku Singh | 2 | 3 |
