Rangers sign GM Chris Young to extension, promote him to president of baseball operations

One year after securing the World Series victory, the Texas Rangers have made a significant move by extending general manager Chris Young’s contract for multiple years. In addition to this extension, Young has been promoted from executive vice president to president of baseball operations, a role previously held by Jon Daniels until his termination in August 2022. While the details of Young’s new contract remain undisclosed, his original agreement was set to expire after the current season.

Under Young’s leadership, the Rangers have seen success with key decisions such as signing free-agent infielders Corey Seager and Marcus Semien, as well as pitchers Nathan Eovaldi and Jacob deGrom. Furthermore, the hiring of three-time World Series champion Bruce Bochy as manager proved to be a strategic move that led to the team’s historic first World Series win last year.

Rangers majority owner Ray Davis expressed confidence in Young’s capabilities, stating, “Our baseball operations group, from scouting and player development to the Major League team, is in great hands with C.Y. at the helm for many years to come.” Young, who joined the Rangers in 2020 and assumed the role of baseball operations head following Daniels’ departure, previously served as vice president of on-field operations for Major League Baseball under Joe Torre.

Prior to his executive roles, Young enjoyed a successful 13-year pitching career with multiple teams before transitioning to a front office position. Despite the Rangers’ current season performance (71-76, third in the AL West) following their World Series triumph, the recent developments showcase the depth of talent Young has cultivated within the organization. Notably, top pitching prospect Kumar Rocker made his MLB debut, with deGrom and Max Scherzer set to return to the starting rotation after recovering from injuries.
