Southampton have made the decision to part ways with manager Russell Martin following their heavy 5-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur.

The loss, where all five goals were conceded in the first half, marks Southampton’s 13th defeat in 16 Premier League matches this season, leaving them in a precarious position nine points away from safety.

In light of Wolves also sacking their manager Gary O’Neil earlier in the day, after a string of defeats, Southampton has followed suit by removing Martin from his position after 18 months in charge.

The club’s statement read: “We have taken the difficult decision to part ways with our Men’s First Team Manager, Russell Martin. We all recognized the challenges of this season as we adjusted to the top-flight, but the need for results to improve has been clear.”

The statement further expressed gratitude towards Martin and his staff for their dedication and hard work, especially highlighting the Play-Off Final win last season as a memorable achievement.

Following the appointment of Simon Rusk as interim boss, Southampton expressed confidence in the development of talent within their Academy and thanked fans for their continued support and understanding.
