When Dustin Poirier analyzes footage of UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev, he doesn’t find the task of defeating him at UFC 302 on June 1 to be any easier. Poirier acknowledges Makhachev’s well-rounded skills, including his standup, wrestling, and strength, making him a formidable opponent. Despite not spotting any weaknesses in Makhachev after thorough film study, Poirier remains confident in his ability to win the fight, predicting a knockout victory.

For Poirier, this fight represents a crucial opportunity to finally claim the undisputed UFC lightweight championship at the age of 35. Having previously won an interim title, Poirier knows the significance of holding the real championship belt and the impact it can have on his legacy in the sport. Overcoming obstacles like being underestimated by matchmakers and securing his place as a top contender has been a challenging journey for Poirier.

After a convincing win in his last fight, Poirier found himself in the right position to challenge for the title. Despite initial doubts about getting the title shot, unforeseen circumstances led to Poirier being selected as the next challenger for Makhachev. Now facing the odds as an underdog, Poirier is determined to defy expectations and emerge victorious in his quest for the UFC lightweight championship.

There are two possibilities at play here. One is that the belt will remain where it is at the end of the day.

On the other hand, when it comes to the guillotine, Poirier’s coaches have been emphasizing to him, like a broken record, not to go for that chokehold this time around.

Poirier himself acknowledges this advice but also admits that he may still go for it depending on how he feels in the moment. It’s a risky move, but one that could potentially lead him to victory and the UFC championship title. It would be a fitting end to his journey, almost like a scene from a movie.

However, the reality is likely to be much tougher. The stars may not align in his favor again, and the opportunity may slip away.

Despite the challenges, Poirier remains determined to climb his way back up the ranks and achieve his ultimate goal of becoming the undisputed world champion. It’s a goal he has been working towards for years, and he is not ready to give up on it just yet.
