Wander Franco, a player associated with the Tampa Bay Rays, was taken into custody in the Dominican Republic following an altercation in a parking lot where firearms were brandished, as reported by ESPN. Prosecutors have indicated that he will be charged with illegal use and possession of a firearm.
Franco informed authorities that the Glock firearm discovered in his vehicle, along with a magazine and ammunition, belonged to his uncle. The incident at a San Juan de la Maguana apartment complex involved Franco, an unidentified individual, and the latter’s father, with no injuries reported.
This is not the first time Franco has faced legal issues. He is scheduled to go on trial starting December 12 after being investigated for allegedly having a relationship with a 14-year-old girl. Dominican authorities have accused him of multiple offenses, including commercial sexual exploitation and money laundering.
Major League Baseball placed Franco on administrative leave in the summer of 2023, subsequently moving him to the restricted list, meaning he does not receive compensation or service time and is not on the Rays’ 40-player roster.
Franco signed a lucrative contract with the Rays in 2021, but his legal troubles have overshadowed his baseball career.
